Why treadmills show speed and runners think in pace
Treadmills display speed in distance-per-hour because that is how the belt motor is controlled. Runners think in pace — time per kilometre or mile — because that is what GPS watches and race clocks show. The two are the mathematical inverse of each other: a speed of 10 kph equals exactly 6:00 /km. The conversion is simple (pace in min/km = 60 ÷ speed in kph), but having a lookup to hand is faster than doing the mental arithmetic in the middle of a workout.
The 1% incline rule
Running on a flat treadmill belt is mechanically easier than running outdoors at the same speed. The belt assists your stride slightly, and there is no air resistance. The widely cited rule of thumb is to set the treadmill to 1% incline to better match the energy cost of outdoor running at the same pace.
This matters most when your treadmill sessions are meant to carry over to outdoor races. If you run all your threshold sessions at 10 kph on a flat belt and then expect to hold 6:00 /km on the road, you will likely find it harder than expected. Adding 1% incline closes most of that gap.
Mapping treadmill sessions to your outdoor training zones

How the math works
This converter does exactly one thing: it turns a treadmill speed reading into a running pace, and back again. There is no incline adjustment inside that calculation — the tool converts numbers between speed and pace, nothing more.
The relationship is a simple inverse. Speed is distance covered per hour; pace is time spent per unit of distance. If the belt shows 10 km/h, you cover 10 kilometres in 60 minutes, so one kilometre takes 60 ÷ 10 = 6 minutes — a pace of 6:00 /km. In general:
- pace (min/km) = 60 ÷ speed (km/h)
- speed (km/h) = 60 ÷ pace (min/km)
Miles work the same way once distance is converted: multiply km/h by 1.60934 (the number of kilometres in a mile) to get mph, or divide mph by 1.60934 to get km/h. The converter runs both directions from a single speed entry, so switching from kph to mph, or asking for pace per mile instead of per km, never needs a second calculation — it is the same inverse relationship applied to a different unit.
That single unit conversion and its inverse are the entire engine behind every number on this page. The 1% incline convention described above sits outside that math completely: it is a dial you turn on the machine to make the physical effort of a given belt speed feel closer to the same pace outdoors, not a value the converter computes or adjusts for. Enter 10 km/h and you get 6:00 /km whether the belt is flat, tilted to 1%, or tilted to 5% — incline changes how hard that pace feels, not what pace 10 km/h equals.
Worked example
Say your last outdoor tempo run averaged 5:30 /km and you want to reproduce that effort on a treadmill.
- Convert pace to a decimal. 5:30 /km is 5 minutes plus 30 seconds; 30 seconds is 30 ÷ 60 = 0.5 minutes, so the pace is 5.5 minutes per km.
- Convert pace to speed. 60 ÷ 5.5 = 10.91 km/h. That is the belt speed that reproduces a 5:30 /km pace exactly, by definition of the conversion above.
- Convert to mph if your display uses it. 10.91 ÷ 1.60934 = 6.78 mph.
- Set the belt to 10.91 km/h (or 6.78 mph). The converter's job stops here — steps 1 through 3 are the whole calculation, and entering 5:30 into the pace field above returns exactly these numbers.
- Separately, set the incline to 1% if this session is meant to carry over to outdoor pacing. This is a practice decision, not an output of the converter: a flat belt at 10.91 km/h is mechanically easier than holding 5:30 /km on the road, for the reasons covered in "Why treadmills show speed and runners think in pace" and "The 1% incline rule" above. Treat the calorie number on the console as a rough estimate rather than an exact figure — most treadmills calculate it from generic formulas based on speed, incline and body weight, and it is not measured directly.
